More people are buying electric vehicles (EVs) in Australia, but if you’re making the jump from a petrol or diesel car you may be hung up on servicing requirements.

You’d be familiar with the typical service intervals on internal combustion cars to change their engine oil or service transmissions, but EVs don’t have any of that. There are fewer moving parts, which means maintenance information is different.

You’ll still need to have wear and tear items checked like your brakes, tyres, and joints, but each brand goes about servicing their EVs differently.

100s of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now.

Tesla, Australia’s current best-selling EV manufacturer, doesn’t outline complete service intervals or pricing at all, while BMW only details pre-paid service packages for its EVs.

To help clear it up, we’ve compiled the top six best-selling EVs in Australia so far this year and broken down their respective servicing and warranty information.

We’ve chosen to look at six because the top two are both Teslas, which don’t have representative service information.

Range figures quoted have been taken from the European WLTP testing cycle.

Tesla Model Y and Model 3

As mentioned, Tesla does things differently in the servicing department.

The electric vehicle manufacturer does not publish service intervals for the Model Y or Model 3.

It recommends a brake fluid check and cabin air filter replacement every two years, HEPA filter replacement at three years, and an air-conditioning service every four years – in addition to standard wheel balancing and tyre rotation.

For the Model 3, Tesla recommends having the air-conditioning filters changed every two years, and checking the tyre tread, balance, and rotation every 20,000km.

It also recommends brake fluid is checked every two years, and the pads and discs lubricated every 12 months in colder climates.

    BYD Seal

Unlike its Tesla rival, BYD outlines an average annual service price of $380.81 for 11 years of servicing, adding up to a total of $4189.

That figure is only for the Dynamic and Premium variants of the Seal, though the entire range is covered by a six-year, 150,000km warranty and an eight-year, 160,000km battery pack warranty.

12 months of roadside assistance is included with each new BYD vehicle, which can be extended at the time of purchase or at each scheduled service – both for an added cost.

BYD outlines service intervals of 12 months or 20,000km for the Seal range.

The range-opening Dynamic and middling Premium are both rear-wheel drive, with 64.1kWh and 82.5kWh batteries respectively. BYD claims a range of 460km for the Dynamic, while the Premium is capable of 570km.

    MG 4

All MG 4 variants except the XPower are covered by seven years of capped-price servicing, adding up to an average annual price of $557.86.

All MG 4 variants are covered by a 10-year, 250,000km warranty and a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty. 10 years of roadside assistance are also offered, maintained so long as you service your MG 4 within the MG dealer network.

Services are required every 24 months or 40,000km, whichever comes first. For the MG 4 Excite 51, Excite 64, Essence 64, and Long Range 77, seven years of capped-price servicing adds up to $3905.

Like the Seal Performance, the XPower is slightly more expensive to service. Warranties and service intervals remain the same, but seven years of capped-price servicing increases to an average of $581.43 per year.

That equates to a total of $4070, which means there’s a smaller gap between the XPower and non-performance MG 4s than there is between the equivalent BYD Seals.

The XPower offers a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup and is fed by a 64kWh battery, with a claimed range of 400km.
