A learner driver has been hit with a hefty fine after being caught speeding in New South Wales, but they weren’t the only one to draw the ire of police.
Announced in a post on Facebook, Yass Highway Patrol intercepted a Mitsubishi ASX travelling at 127hm/h on the Hume Highway – a 110km/h signposted road.
However, holders of learner licences in New South Wales are limited to 90km/h, meaning the driver was caught travelling at almost 40km/h above their speed limit, which incurs a $1097 fine and five demerit point penalty.
The car was also found to not have the driver’s L plates displayed, resulting in a further $320 fine and two demerit points.
With eight points racked up in one hit, the driver’s licence was suspended for three months.
The learner driver wasn’t the only occupant to cop a fine, with their fully licensed supervisor in the passenger seat also issued a penalty notice “for failing in their duties to supervise a learner driver accordingly.”
New South Wales does not list a specific fine amount or demerit point penalty online for this infringement.
