The most fuel efficient 4x4 utes in Australia

4×4 utes are about a lot more than just off-roading or heavy hauling in 2024.

They’re designed to offer a blend of practicality and comfort, giving drivers a raised ride and tough looks. They also come equipped with enough space to cater to both business and personal needs.

However, these single- and dual-cab utes tend to consume a lot of fuel. Some are thirstier than others, though.

These are the most efficient 4x4s in Australia. These cars have been selected from the 4×4 segment of the VFACTS sales chart published by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

This table is arranged alphabetically, and contains only the most efficient member of each range. Click on one of the following variants to jump straight to its breakdown.

Ford Ranger

The Ranger XLT 4×4 extended cab pickup 2.0 Bi-Turbo diesel is the most fuel efficient variant in the lineup, using a claimed 6.9L/100km.

The 2024 Ford Ranger 4×4 range starts at $47,980 before on-road costs with the 4×4 XL Bi-Turbo single cab chassis and extends to the Ranger Raptor 4×4 V6 double cab pickup, priced at $90,400 before on-road costs.

All variants of the Ford Ranger lineup except the flagship Raptor have a five-star ANCAP safety rating. All variants are also covered by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.

GWM Cannon Alpha

The GWM Cannon Alpha Lux and Ultra are the two most fuel-efficient variants of the range, using 8.9L/100km.

That’s despite the range-topping Cannon Alpha packing a petrol hybrid powertrain instead of the turbo-diesel in the Alpha and Ultra.

The GWM Cannon Alpha range opens with the Lux diesel, priced at $51,990 drive-away, and extends to the Ultra Hybrid priced at $64,990 drive-away.

The entire range is covered by a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty. It has yet to be tested by ANCAP.

GWM Cannon Ute

The entire GWM Cannon Ute range uses a claimed 9.4L/100km.

The range now opens at $38,990 drive-away for the GWM Cannon Ute 4×4 and extends to $54,990 drive-away for the GWM Cannon Ute XSR.

After initially failing to earn a five-star ANCAP rating, the GWM Ute range was modified by the factory.

It was subsequently awarded a five-star safety rating from ANCAP in November 2021. However, this doesn’t include the Cannon CC and Cannon-XSR, as these models haven’t been tested.

The entire range is also backed by a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.

Isuzu D-Max

The Isuzu D-Max SX Crew Cab Ute 1.9L auto is the most fuel-efficient variant of the range, using a claimed 6.9L per 100km.

The range starts with the 4×4 SX single cab chassis, starting at $42,700 and extends to the X-Terrain Crew Cab Ute, starting at $70,500. Both prices exclude on-road costs.

The D-Max is covered by a six-year, 150,000km warranty and has a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

LDV T60/T60 Max

The two most fuel-efficient LDV T60 variants use a claimed 8.9L/100km.

The LDV T60 range opens with the Max Plus manual at $39,042 drive-away for private buyers, and extends to the LDV T60 Max Plus Mega Tub Auto, priced at $52,095 drive-away.

Both prices are for private buyers; visit the LDV website for ABN holder pricing.

LDV covers the entire range with a seven-year, 200,000km warranty, and the T60 maintains its 2017 five-star ANCAP safety rating until the end of 2024.

Mazda BT-50

The Mazda BT-50 XS auto 4×4 dual cab uses a claimed 6.9L/100km, making it the most fuel-efficient variant of the range.

The 4×4 range starts at $43,520 with the BT-50 XT single cab chassis 3.0 manual and extends to the BT-50 Thunder dual-cab pickup 3.0 auto, priced at $74,095. All prices exclude on-road costs.

The entire range is covered by Mazda’s five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty and has a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

Mitsubishi Triton

The entire Mitsubishi Triton range uses a claimed 7.7L/100km.

The 4×4 ute range starts with the GLX+ 4×4 club-cab ute, kicking off at $50,340, and extends to the GSR 4×4 dual-cab ute which starts at $63,840. All prices exclude on-road costs.

The 2024 Mitsubishi Triton has a five-star ANCAP safety rating. It’s backed a 10-year, 200,000km warranty if you service the ute through Mitsubishi dealers.

Nissan Navara

The most fuel-efficient variant of the Nissan Navara range uses a claimed 7.2L/100km.

The range opens at $33,550 before on-roads for the Navara SL 4×2 manual single-cab chassis, and extends to $71,265 before on-roads for the Navara Pro-4X Warrior 4×4 automatic dual-cab pickup.

The entire Nissan Navara line-up is backed by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.

A five-star ANCAP safety rating only applies to Nissan Navara examples built prior to 1 January 2023. Models produced after the aforementioned date are unrated.

SsangYong Musso/Musso XLV

The SsangYong Musso ELX and Adventure use a claimed 8.6L/100km.

The range starts with the SsangYong Musso ELX, priced at $40,000 drive-away, and extends to the Musso Ultimate, priced at $45,000 drive-away.

The 2024 Musso range has not been crash-tested by ANCAP or Euro NCAP, but is supported by a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.

Toyota HiLux

The most fuel-efficient variant is the Toyota HiLux Workmate manual 4×4 double cab, using a claimed 7.1L/100km.

Toyota LandCruiser 70

The new 2.8-litre turbo-diesel version of the Toyota LandCruiser 70 uses a claimed 9.6L/100km, compared to the now-defunct 4.5-litre variants that use 10.7L/100km.

The LandCruiser 70 Series range opens with LandCruiser 76 Series Wagon Workmate, starting at $75,600, and extends to the LandCruiser 79 Series double-cab chassis GXL, priced at $87,600. Both prices exclude on-road costs.

The Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series has the same five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty as the broader Toyota range, extended to seven years on the powertrain if you keep up with the scheduled services.

It was tested by ANCAP back in 2016 and received five stars, however this was for the single cab-chassis variant only.

Volkswagen Amarok

The Volkswagen Amarok Life and Style variants use 7.2L/100km, making them the two most fuel-efficient variants of the range.

The Amarok lineup opens with the Core, starting at $55,490 before on-road costs, and extends to the Aventura TDI600 priced at $82,990 before on-road costs.

Like the wider Volkswagen range, the Amarok is backed by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty. It also received a five-star ANCAP safety rating against the 2020-2022 testing protocols.
