With that in mind, how can you know which will offer the most in cargo capacity while still maintaining its ability to carry as many people as possible?

To help figure it out, we’ve taken the options in the ‘People Movers less than $70,000’ category on the VFACTS sales charts and compared them based on their claimed boot space measurements in their maximum seating configuration.

You’ll notice some figures are missing. That’s either because the car doesn’t allow for particular configurations or because the rear rows aren’t fixed in place, making it difficult to get a concrete measurement.

There are more premium people movers on the market right now too, which will be detailed in a future article as they’re considerably more expensive. All boot space figures listed are derived from the VDA standard unless otherwise stated.

Hyundai Staria

Hyundai’s quirky Staria heads the list, with a claimed boot capacity of 831 litres when all seats are in use.

The Staria can house eight passengers comfortably, though you can fold the third row to reveal an increased capacity of 1303 litres.

Hyundai doesn’t quote a boot capacity with both rear rows folded, though you can split the seats 60:40 to accommodate obscure cargo and passenger needs. As an added bonus, a full-size alloy spare wheel is included as standard on all Staria variants.

The range starts at $49,500 before on-roads for the base 3.5-litre petrol front-wheel drive Staria, and extends to $67,500 before on-roads for the flagship all-wheel drive turbo-diesel Highlander. It’s backed by Hyundai’s five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, and includes wireless smartphone mirroring as standard.

Volkswagen Multivan

The first in Volkswagen’s van family is the Multivan, which is sold in both short- and long-wheelbase variants. The latter will give you 763 litres of boot space when all seats are in use.

These figures are measured to the roof, and as Volkswagen doesn’t quote specific boot space figures for the Multivan in Australia, they’ve been compiled from international sources like this Top Gear review.

Volkswagen Australia instead claims a boot capacity “from 4300 litres” for the Multivan, while external sources claim a maximum capacity of 4005 litres in LWB variants with both sliding rear rows out of the way. At capacity, the Multivan will seat a maximum of seven passengers in both SWB and LWB configurations.

The cheapest variants of the eight-vehicle lineup benefit from a full-size steel spare wheel, with others fitted with a tyre repair kit as a result of packaging constraints.

The cheapest Multivan on sale right now is the TDI340 Comfortline for $69,290 before on-road costs, with the range topping out at $98,690 before on-roads for the TDI450 Highline 4Motion. Volkswagen backs its vans with a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.

Kia Carnival

The segment sales-dominating Kia Carnival is among the cheaper vehicles here and has a minimum boot capacity of 627 litres.

With the third row folded down its capacity expands to 2827 litres, and at maximum capacity you’ll be able to fit eight passengers onboard.

The Carnival is the only people mover here to offer a hybrid powertrain, though it’s only available at the top of the range for $76,210 before on-road costs. It’s also the only variant to include a tyre repair kit in lieu of a space saver spare.

At the cheaper end of the range, the Carnival will set you back $50,150 before on-roads for the base S V6, which maintains wireless smartphone mirroring like the rest of the range. Kia also boasts the longest warranty on the list, with its people mover covered by a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre deal.

LDV Mifa

LDV’s people mover is the first here to have full quoted boot space figures, with the smallest measurement listed at 466 litres.

The internal combustion Mifa is sold in three variants, and all share the same boot capacity figures. With seven seats of capacity, you can fold the third row to open up 1702 litres of space, or both rear rows for a maximum of 2017 litres.

All three variants also include an 18-inch steel spare wheel as standard, which is full-size for the base Mode. The two more expensive Executive and Luxe grades ride on 19-inch alloys instead.

The Mifa lineup starts at $53,990 drive-away for the Mode, and extends to $72,990 drive-away for the Luxe. It’s the second vehicle here to offer a seven-year warranty, though it’s limited to 200,000 kilometres.

Volkswagen Caddy

Two Volkswagen vans round out this list. The first is the Caddy Maxi with a minimum boot capacity of 446 litres.

Its small frame can fit a maximum of seven passengers, while also expanding to 3105 litres of boot capacity if you’ve only got the front two seats in use.

All variants benefit from a full-size steel spare wheel, and you have a choice between petrol or diesel power. The petrol is cheaper across the six-strong range, which starts at $52,290 before on-roads for the base TSI220 Maxi.

At the top of the range is the diesel California Maxi, which is priced at $64,090 before on-roads. As with the other Volkswagen vans, the Caddy Maxi is covered by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.

Volkswagen Caravelle

The Volkswagen Caravelle has no quoted boot capacity figures in with the second and third rows in place, though Volkswagen Australia lists a cargo volume of “up to 6700 litres”.

It shares its length with the long-wheelbase Multivan, though its commercial focus mean it comes in considerably cheaper. At $69,290 before on-roads, it costs the same as the cheapest SWB Multivan.

The Caravelle also has the highest passenger capacity of an people mover here, as it can fit nine people across its four rows. Those rows are split and can slide too, meaning it’s highly configurable.

As a bonus, the whole range receives a full-size steel spare wheel as standard. It’s also another of Volkswagen’s vans that is covered by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.
