About the Toyota Corolla
Last updated Dec 18, 2024The 2025 Toyota Corolla remains essentially unchanged from the previous years, with the current generation now offered with hybrid powertrains only. This does not include the sporty GR Corolla, which maintains its turbocharged engine and available in both manual and automatic.
The Corolla is offered as a hatch and a sedan, with the hatch having launched in 2018 and the sedan coming in 2020. The current model of the Toyota Corolla sold in Australia is the 12th generation (E210) of one of the world's best known car models, with the first model having launched all the way back in 1966. More than 50 million have been produced since then.
We anticipate that the next-generation of the Toyota Corolla should be unveiled in 2025 and hit Australian shores by late 2025 or early 2026.

The boot space for the Corolla hatch hybrid is tiny, measuring just 217L. The Corolla Sedan offers 470 litres of boot space, which is well up on the Corolla Hatch’s. It’s convenient for the class and explains why you’d opt for the sedan over the hatch if you don't mind the styling. The sedan's boot itself opens nice and wide, making it simple to slot in awkwardly shaped items. A space saver spare lives under the boot floor.

2025 Toyota Corolla Interior
The Toyota Corolla, particularly in its base specification, remains an economy car with a functional and solidly built interior. It's clear where cost-saving measures have been applied in this fleet-focused model, with hard door plastics and an untrimmed urethane steering wheel. Despite its simplicity, the interior is effective and practical.
Ergonomics are well thought out, and overall comfort is commendable. The cloth seats are supportive and adjustable, and the compact steering wheel offers a pleasant feel, featuring intuitive controls. The focus here is on simplicity and functionality, delivering exactly what's needed without unnecessary embellishments.
While the Ascent Sport cabin contains a higher proportion of durable materials, everything feels well-constructed and built to last, though the centre tunnel may shift slightly under pressure. The driver's display features a basic 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster flanked by dot matrix-style gauges for fuel level and engine temperature. Though not as advanced as the 12.3-inch digital panel in the ZR variant, this display is standard on many Lexus models, highlighting its practicality.
The 8.0-inch central touchscreen runs Toyota's latest interface, offering standard navigation in the hybrid model alongside wireless smartphone mirroring, which performed flawlessly. The software is straightforward and user-friendly, making it well-suited for an entry-level grade. This model also includes a 12-month subscription to Toyota Connected Services, providing SOS emergency call, automatic collision notification, stolen vehicle tracking, and remote services via the myToyota Connect app, though subscription costs apply after the first year.
Storage is well catered for, with numerous slots and compartments, including a phone-shaped cubby under the dashboard, though no wireless charger is provided in this trim.
The Corolla Sedan outperforms the Hatch for those who frequently use the second row due to its 60mm extended wheelbase, which offers more leg and knee room. The rear space is basic, lacking rear air vents but featuring a storage slot and a fold-down centre armrest with cupholders. ISOFIX and top tether points are provided for child seats, covering all essential needs.
The Corolla Sedan also boasts a generous 470 litres of boot space, significantly more than the Corolla Hatch’s 217 litres, making it a practical choice within its class. The wide boot opening facilitates the loading of larger items, and a space-saving spare tyre is stored under the boot floor.
2025 Toyota Corolla Infotainment
All major controls are conveniently positioned, with a simple climate control panel located below the 8.0-inch touchscreen, and the wireless phone charger neatly integrated beneath the dashboard. However, caution is advised with the heated seat switches, as they can be easily triggered when placing a phone in that area, potentially causing discomfort on warmer days.
While the related Corolla Cross SUV benefits from a 10.5-inch touchscreen, the top-spec Corolla is equipped with an 8.0-inch unit. This display, though user-friendly with clean graphics, intuitive menus, and wireless smartphone mirroring, feels somewhat small compared to what’s available in competitors like the Hyundai i30 Sedan, especially given the price point.
The driver faces a modern 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a significant upgrade from the previous hybrid analogue/digital setup in top-tier Toyota models. While Volkswagen offers more customisation, sharper graphics, and superior mapping, this is still a positive step forward for Toyota.
Front storage is ample, with well-placed cupholders and a sizeable underarm bin. However, the positioning of the USB-C port under the dashboard on the passenger side leaves it somewhat vulnerable to accidental knocks from knees.

How does the 2025 Toyota Corolla drive?
Our expert take on Toyota Corolla drivability.
Starting the Toyota Corolla Hybrid with its bright blue push-button is a quiet and intriguing experience, often devoid of the expected petrol engine surge. Instead, the vehicle emits a subtle beep, indicating it's ready to go. Exceptions occur in colder conditions or when the high-voltage battery is depleted, causing the petrol engine to engage at startup. Even then, the engine remains relatively quiet, though it momentarily disrupts the tranquil electric vehicle (EV) silence.
Once in motion, the Corolla Hybrid operates smoothly, particularly at low speeds. From 0-40km/h, it effortlessly keeps pace with or outperforms traffic, primarily running on electric power. This performance is enhanced by the front axle-mounted electric motor and the updated lithium-ion battery pack introduced since the 2023 model. When more power is required, or when in "Power Mode," the petrol engine kicks in to assist, though it can be slightly intrusive as it tends to rev high when electric power wanes.
Despite its smaller battery compared to plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and full EVs, the Corolla Hybrid optimises its petrol-electric hybrid system for urban driving, remaining in EV mode whenever possible. A dedicated "EV Mode" allows the car to run solely on electric power, though this can be easily overridden by hard acceleration or higher speeds. In heavy traffic, the hybrid system can utilise the electric motor for a significant portion of the journey, with regenerative braking playing a key role in maintaining EV mode.
Regenerative braking, while not offering a full one-pedal driving experience, is integrated smoothly when decelerating, though the physical brakes can sometimes engage more abruptly when coming to a stop. This system also helps mitigate the CVT's tendency to cause speed creeping on downhill slopes. For additional braking, the gear selector can be shifted to "B," which primarily uses engine braking, though it can cause the petrol engine to rev noticeably.
On highways, the hybrid system is less effective, as the petrol engine remains active to maintain higher speeds, with the electric motor providing occasional support. Acceleration from 80-100km/h is noticeably slower than at lower speeds, but the vehicle remains competent for rural driving. Despite this, the Corolla Hybrid delivers exceptional fuel efficiency, averaging 4.0L/100km over 500km of mixed urban and rural driving. Fuel consumption ranged from as low as 3.1L/100km to no higher than 5.1L/100km, allowing for a range of approximately 1000km per tank.
Toyota has finely tuned the suspension of the Corolla Hybrid, offering a balanced ride that feels both compliant and controlled over various road surfaces. The 16-inch alloy wheels with thicker tyres contribute to this smooth ride by absorbing road imperfections. Despite the added weight of the high-voltage battery, the Corolla Hybrid remains agile and responsive, encouraging confident driving. At higher speeds, it feels planted and stable, making highway cruising effortless.
The adaptive cruise control system has been improved since 2023 model, now applying the brakes to maintain the set speed rather than allowing the vehicle to exceed it and relying on a chime to signal over-speeding. While the radar system tends to brake early in traffic, which can be both helpful and frustrating, overall, it performs well in peak-hour conditions. The lane-keeping and emergency steering assist systems are also effective, with only occasional minor confusion in identifying lane markings.
